White Sox Deal Smith to Orioles for Carey
Sunday, October 10th , 1954
It came down to the last hour of a self-imposed trade deadline, but the Chicago White Sox and Baltimore Orioles finally came to an agreement on a trade that had been rumored for weeks. The trade sends Chicago's 26-year old RF Al Smith to Baltimore in a swap for 25-year old RHP Mike Blyzka and 22-year old 3B Andy Carey. Both GMs seemed relieved that the deal had been completed with one stating, "We had to set a deadline to get it done." The players are expected to report to their new teams by tomorrow.
As far as career numbers, Smith has compiled a .272 batting average and collected 981 hits, 76 home runs and 466 RBIs.
Lifetime Carey is batting .262 and has hit 12 home runs.
