Bevens Whips New York, 6-0
Wednesday, September 29th , 1954
There was no spell, no black magic -- just good pitching.
Bill Bevens of the New York Giants blanked the New York Yankees, 6-0, at Polo Grounds, and he did it the old-fashioned way. After finishing the 1-hit, complete-game shutout, he was all smiles.
"I threw a lot of my pitches for strikes in this game," Bevens said. "I mixed it up and tried keeping these guys off balance."
Bevens walked 3 and struck out 4 in the victory.
"He was throwing his breaking ball for strikes and we never capitalized on any of his mistakes," Yankees manager said later.
So far this year, Bevens has made 32 starts, tossed 249 innings, struck out 127 batters and walked 133. His record is 21-8 with a 3.58 ERA and he has limited opposing teams to a .225 batting average.
